James Van Der Beek may not have been able to return to the stage with his former castmates, but he still found a heartfelt way to join the Dawson’s Creek reunion.
The 48-year-old actor, best known for his role as Dawson Leery on the beloved late-’90s teen drama, was originally scheduled to appear at a special cast reunion charity event on Sept. 22 at New York City’s Richard Rodgers Theatre. The evening, organized in support of the nonprofit F Cancer, featured a live reading of the show’s 1998 pilot episode and brought together much of the original cast.

Van Der Beek, who revealed in 2023 that he had been diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer, was unable to attend the event in person due to illness. Instead, he recorded a moving video message that played during the gathering.
“I’ve been looking forward to this night for months ever since my angel Michelle Williams told me she was organizing it,” he shared in the clip. “I can’t believe I’m not there. I can’t believe I don’t get to hug my castmates, my beautiful cast, in person.”
He went on to thank the cast, crew, organizers, and longtime fans of Dawson’s Creek. “You are the best fans in the world,” he said.

“On Dawson’s Creek, I never had an understudy—but this is Broadway,” Van Der Beek joked in his message. “My kids think Lin is an upgrade.”
